Just Get the Answer – Unibap iX20 has arrived!

A new generation of space computer is ready for launch aboard a SpaceX mission. Swedish company Unibap Space Solutions is introducing iX20, a space computer that can analyze and process large volumes of data directly in space in an entirely new way. Until now, satellites have primarily collected data and transmitted it back to Earth for analysis. Unibap’s new technology addresses a rapidly growing demand within defense, surveillance, and reconnaissance, where timeliness and decision-making speed are critical.

The current geopolitical landscape, including growing competition between the United States and China in space, has led to significant investments in space-based defense capabilities. A major focus is on ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), where satellites are used to enhance situational awareness and support decision-making. At the same time, the U.S. is strengthening its space defense posture through initiatives such as Golden Dome, while commercial players like SpaceX are driving innovation through investments in satellite infrastructure and AI-enabled space services.

 

 

iX20 Makes Real-Time Surveillance and Reconnaissance Possible
Real-time space-based surveillance is therefore highly relevant today, but it has not previously been practical on a larger scale. The reason is that it requires extremely powerful onboard computing capable of handling vast amounts of data from cameras and sensors while simultaneously performing advanced analyses directly in orbit. This is where Unibap’s new iX20 space computer comes in.

When Decision Speed Matters
The new space computer is designed and manufactured in Sweden and has already been delivered to selected partners for launch later this year aboard a SpaceX mission. By the end of the year, large-scale production of the iX20 will begin at Unibap’s manufacturing facility in Uppsala, Sweden.

Development of the iX20 and its associated AI-based software has been led by Oskar Flordal, Chief Technology Officer at Unibap.

– iX20 is the third generation of our space computers, and its predecessors are currently operating in more than 40 satellites and space missions. It represents a major technological shift, enabling satellites to be flexible and fast enough to adapt to different mission requirements, says Oskar Flordal.

The iX20 acquires, processes and analyse advanced space data in real-time.

 

Decision speed has become a decisive factor, and that is where traditional satellites fall short. When raw data is transmitted to Earth for processing, the delay can be significant, reducing the value and relevance of the information by the time it has been analyzed.

The major technological shift will become reality later this year when the first satellites equipped with Unibap’s next-generation computers are launched. Analysis will move from the ground into space, shortening the path from observation to actionable information. The era of space computing has begun.
